Zack Snyderdidn't grow up daydreaming of Superman. He preferred to read the very R-rated Heavy Metal magazine instead.
"I'm 14 and I'm reading these comic stories with real sex and violence in them,"says Snyder.
"And it was just hard for me then to pick up a normal comic book without going, 'Well, when are they going to start f—g and killing each other?'"
Nevertheless, when"The Dark Knight"directorChristopher Nolanoffered Snyder the chance to direct the upcoming"Superman: Man of Steel"reboot based on his 2009 superhero movie,"Watchmen,"he accepted faster than a speeding bullet.
Snyder is well aware that the Man of Steel, indestructible and without the charming neuroses ofSpider-Manor Batman, can be kryptonite to a filmmaker— seeBryan Singer's 2006"Superman Returns."
"For us, the work on the movie is making him relatable, making him relevant and current,"says Snyder."There's of course a giant story to be told as well, but that's the real nut that we have to crack."
One item to cross off his to-do list is finding the right man for the tights. He signed British actorHenry Cavillafter seeing him audition in a Superman costume.
"When he had the suit on, everybody was like, 'That's it,'"says Snyder."There was just this sort of silent nodding going on."
